Myrtle, Tarentina (Myrtus communis)

Myrtle, Tarentina – Myrtus communis

Myrtle, Tarentina – Myrtus communis is an evergreen perennial which has small aromatic leaves. This smaller growing variety has starry white flowers from spring to mid-summer.

In the garden Myrtle requires well drained soil in a very sheltered position, preferably against a south facing wall.

Add the aromatic leaves to pot-pourris. Myrtle also has culinary properties. Try tucking a few leaves into roast meats towards the end of cooking time. You can also use the dry fruits as a spice.

Historically brides would have some in their bouquet because it was a symbol of love and consistency. It was also thought to be an aphrodisiac.
