Description:
Bergamot, Red (Monarda didyma)
Bergamot, Red – Monarda didyma
Bergamot, Red – Monarda didyma is a hardy perennial with aromatic foliage. It has fantastic scarlet flowers in the summer which are truly spectacular when planted en masse. As the other name of ‘Bee Balm’ suggests it is also highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.
Bergamot grows well in rich moist soil in a sunny or semi shaded spot. Cut back in autumn. Split crowns every few years.
The aromatic leaves are used to make Oswego Tea. Add a leaf to your everyday tea to get that ‘Earl Grey’ flavour. The leaves are also good in cool summer drinks, cocktails and wine cups. Dry flowers to add to potpourris.
Bergamot also has medicinal properties.
