Plants for Scent

Our taste and smell senses are very closely linked which is probably why our mouth’s water when we catch the aroma of something delicious cooking! Cooking with home grown herbs doubles that pleasure when we can look forward to the season when a herb has reached its succulent best.  Wild Garlic in early spring, fresh Mint for new potatoes, Basil for sun ripened tomatoes, Lemon Verbena for summer’s ice cold drinks, warm Thyme for autumn casseroles or bunches of Rosemary and Bay at Christmas.  On the patio or terrace, large pots can overflow with scent especially when they are close enough to brush against. For example, plant Fragrant or Lemonade Thyme, Dwarf Lavenders, Cheddar Pinks, Sweet Marjoram, African Basil, Aztec Sweet Herb, Splisbury Mint and Lemon Verbena or save a couple of containers for a citrus, fruity Mint such as Grapefruit Mint or Lime Mint.  Just perfect for long summer evenings when one can just lean over and pluck a fragrant leaf to hold in your hand or add to your evening tipple!  Don’t forget the blackcurrant scented Salvias and Fruit scented Sages and, of course, a mass of Scented Pelargoniums!  Our senses are reeling just writing this!  In the garden, the sky’s the limit and, if it is sheltered where scent can be enclosed, it will be a sanctuary for your wellbeing. Plant Southernwood near the entrance (said to keep your loved one from straying!) where you can brush against it each time you pass. Plant Hyssops, Lavenders, Sages and Marjorams. Add Balms, Rosemarys, Clove Pinks and Cotton Lavenders. And find room for Fennel, Savory and Curry Plants which add the warm, spicy undertones.  And now, just relax!
