Salvias

Who could not love Salvias for their stunning colours, long flowering period and versability in the garden. Fantastic for pollinators too and a real favourite for Hummingbird Hawkmoths.  There is a colour and growth habit for anyone or any garden and they will flower right through to the first frost of winter.

Choose from small leaved, blackcurrant scented varieties such as Nachtvlinder or Amethyst Lips, the tall, ‘back of the border’ salvias such as Amistad or Black and Blue through to the bi-colours of Belle de Loire or Rhubarb and Custard. Many are hardy too. Our own Jemima’s Gem or the classic Clotted Cream for instance will withstand a chilly English winter providing their roots are not too damp. Salvias are amongst the most popular plants in any gardens because they are easy to grow and many stately homes have long borders dedicated to these beautiful plants.  They also look spectacular grown in large containers and planting several of one variety or using a couple of subtle colour variations can make a real, easy to care for, statement. Underplanting Roses with the lower growing varieties looks beautiful and is also said to reduce blackspot. You can use the blackcurrant scented Salvias as a culinary plant. The leaves are good for stuffings in rich meats such as goose and both the foliage and flowers can be used as garnish in drinks etc.   Cutting back in the spring and again in late summer extends flowering periods and promotes strong growth. We love them!
