Salvia Betty’s Scarlet Gem is the third in our own Gem series (Velvet and Jemima’s are the others). Bright, almost glowing scarlet flowers over fruit scented foliage. As hardy as the other’s in the Gem series. Growth habit is similar to Royal Bumble but with larger leaves and the flowers and certainly brighter! We have been testing this for 3 years (even over ‘the winter of ’22/’23) and it excels. Well done to Morna, Michelle’s mother who bred it and named it after her own mum.
Extremely long flowering season from Spring to late Autumn, benefits from a heavy trim in early summer. The leaves are quite dark in colour, rounded, with a strong fruity scent.
Although some Salvias should be considered half hardy, this variety has proven to be hardy year on year during testing.
Height and spread up to 3 feet.
Excellent for pots, beds and borders.
As with all salvias, this variety is ideal for drought tolerant planting schemes. A long flowering season and popular with pollinators, it is easy to see why Salvias are growing in popularity!
Salvias are very easy to care for in the garden. Trim plants in late summer for Autumn flowering and leave plants over winter. After winter trim back in the warmth of the spring, subsequently this will promote strong re-growth.
New for 2023
