Alecost – Costmary (Tanacetum balsamita)
Alecost – Costmary – Tanacetum balsamita
Alecost is a tall hardy perennial with grey-green leaves that have a strong mint and balsam scent. Small daisy flowers in Summer. Flourishes in a medium soil in a sunny position.
It was originally a brewing ingredient instead of hops in the process of beer making. Still in use today.
It does have culinary properties but use sparingly. Chop young leaves and sprinkle on salads.
Alecost also has medicinal properties too. Crushed leaves are soothing on stings. A tisane is said to relieve catarrh.
