Herb Bennet aka Wood Avens – Geum urbanum is an ancient medicinal herb considered to be very beneficial to health.
You can usually find this native perennial in woodlands and shady places. It has trefoil leaves and yellow star flowers that are carried on nodding stems. Also called ‘Old Man’s Whiskers’ in reference to the bristly seed heads.
Scented roots also used to repel wasps.
Herb Bennet was also known as the ‘Blessed Herb’. The trefoiled leaf was said to represent the Holy Trinity. There are many examples of the plant seen as decoration in churches. It was also believed that a sprig of the plant would ward off evil spirits.
