Salvia Ember’s Wish is a part of a range of Salvias known as the ‘Wishes’ series along with Kisses and Wishes and Love and Wishes. It has taken a while to add this to our list. Did we like it? Not at first but we do now. Having seen it in planting schemes in gardens in 2023 we just had to grow it for 2024. Bright flowers are a focus their own right but planted alongside Kniphofias and Canna’s it is such a statement salvia.
The foliage is slightly aromatic. In some sheltered gardens with free draining soil it will survive a chilly winter but ideally placed in a large pot so it can be sheltered over the cold months. Like all salvias, we recommend trimming back in warm spring weather but if bringing into a warm environment for the winter it will help to cut back to strengthen the plant form the following year.
During the flowering season (spring to late summer outside), trim back spent flowers to next leaf node. If in a pot, feed once every 3 – 4 weeks with a seaweed fertiliser.
A very neat growing variety with a height of up to 2.5 feet. The plant is wonderful at attracting insects and we have even seen hummingbird hawkmoths on the flowers.
