Salvia Merlin’s Magenta

Salvia Merlin’s Magenta

Salvia Merlin’s Magenta has attractive dark magenta flowers as well as foliage with a strong blackcurrant scent. A friend of the Norfolk breeder kindly gave this variety to us to rename and propagate.

The list of names we came up with was extensive but we settled on naming it after something we loved, was gorgeous and was very memorable so why not name it after our beloved border collie and nursery companion Merlin.  Merlin sadly passed away in 2011 from cancer. He was perhaps more ‘saliva’ that ‘salvia’, but he did have presence, gave us joy and stood out from the crowd, just like this Salvia.

Grow in a sunny sheltered spot in well drained soil.

As with all salvias, this variety is ideal for drought tolerant planting schemes. A long flowering season and popular with pollinators, it is easy to see why Salvias are growing in popularity!

Salvias are very easy to care for in the garden. Trim plants in late summer for Autumn flowering and then leave plants over winter. After winter trim back in the warmth of the spring, in order to encourage strong re-growth.
