Medicinal Plants

Herbs with medicinal properties have been used since time immemorial and most are not ‘old wives’ tales’!  In fact, herbs were the only sort of medical help available to our ancestors all over the world.  The history of herbs in medicine is extensive and just too vast to mention here but it is a subject well worth exploring and one can always start with a visit to one of the many display gardens such as the Chelsea Physic Garden, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew or Oxford University Botanical Garden.  Medicinal herbs are, of course, still very much used today whether cleverly re-produced synthetically in modern medicine, widely used in the cosmetic or skin care industries or grown and stored by individuals for simple home remedies in the same way as our grandmothers or those before them once used.   Using herbs solely for treating medical problems or using them alongside prescription drugs can, in some cases, be highly successful but it is a complex subject.  We would like to stress that, although we obviously take a great interest, we, at Norfolk Herbs, are not medicinal herbalists.  This can take many years of intense training so it is imperative that you seek the advice of a fully qualified herbalist before attempting to use these tempting plants!
