Description:
Balm, Lemon Variegated (Melissa officinalis variegata)
Balm, Lemon Variegated – Melissa officinalis variegata
Balm, Lemon Variegated – Melissa officinalis variegata is, as it suggests, a variegated form of Lemon Balm with gold splashed leaves.
It is a hardy perennial with wrinkled green/gold leaves that have a delicious lemon scent.
Plants tolerate most conditions but prefer full sun or partial shade. As a member of the mint family it can be quite boisterous in the border so plant sensibly. Cut back after flowering to avoid self seeding and to encourage a second flush of fresh foliage. As hardy as common Lemon Balm but keep cutting back in order to retain the variegation.
A herb that has many medicinal and culinary properties. The lemon flavour and scent works well with a variety of dishes. Well known in ‘Melissa tea’ which promotes sound sleep.
A useful Bee Plant, excellent for planting around bee hives or in orchards to attract them.
