Tulbaghia (Society Garlic) Plants

For lovers of garlic to enjoy their passion but without the bad breath which follows!  Tulbaghia are often named Society Garlic for this very reason. This clump forming group of South African perennials also produce beautiful clusters of flowers throughout the Summer in shades of mauves, pinks and white which are also edible.

Plant in a sunny position in fertile, free draining soil and keep well watered over the growing season. Although very vigorous plants, they can be just a little tender over a bad winter so always advisable to mulch over the rhizomes during the colder weather. Alternatively, they can be lifted in the autumn and kept potted under protection. Come the Spring, these plants can be split to increase stock before re-planting outside. All parts of the plant can be used for garlic flavouring and the flowers are particularly attractive when used as a garnish. Despite the interesting aroma, the flowers are popular with pollinators especially night moths.
