Basil Plants

The famous variety is Genovese or Sweet Basil but we stock many different types including African with its stunning flowers attractive pollinating insects, Wild Magic and Coldasil which are easier to grow in poor Summer weather or the classic Thai Basil which has a slightly more intense liquorice flavour. Most are tender annuals but we now stock a few perennial basils which can, very often, be kept through the winter in the warmth of your home.  ‘Never cast a clout ‘till May is out’ is a very old saying and still holds true today.  Although it is often used in gardening terms, it basically means don’t start shedding your winter woollies until the end of May!  And the same goes for Basil!  Please don’t be tempted to place or plant Basil outside until the nighttime temperatures have warmed. It really is a hot weather herb and even watering it in the cool of the evening is not advisable. If in doubt, grow the more tender varieties undercover in a greenhouse or conservatory and you will be rewarded with lush growth with stunning scent and flavour!
