Cowslip (Primula veris)
Cowslip – Primula veris
Cowslip – Primula veris is a popular wild flower common in Spring. The name primula in fact means ‘first’ which relates to its early flowering in Spring. Hardy perennial, clusters of fragrant yellow flowers on thick stems above clusters of bright green leaves. Particularly useful to grow for our wildlife as they are an early source of nectar for pollinators.
Cowslips have medicinal properties. They were much more abundant in years gone by and were collected to make cowslip wine. Said to be an excellent sedative!
Cowslip leaves can also be used in salads and other dishes. Flowers can also be added to salads.
