Balm, Lemon (Melissa officinalis)

Balm, Lemon – Melissa officinalis

Balm, Lemon – Melissa officinalis is a hardy perennial with wrinkled green leaves that have a delicious lemon scent.

Plants tolerate most conditions but prefer full sun or partial shade. As a member of the mint family it can be quite boisterous in the border so plant sensibly. Cut back after flowering to avoid self seeding and to encourage a second flush of fresh foliage. Spread 30cm.

A herb that has many medicinal and culinary properties. The lemon flavour and scent works well with a variety of dishes. Well known in ‘Melissa tea’ which promotes sound sleep.

A useful Bee Plant, excellent for planting around bee hives or in orchards to attract them.

We also have a variegated form and a golden variety available.
